The Giant Otter reserve is home to Alexandra and Orimar, a male and female couple who arrived at Yorkshire Wildlife Park on the 30th September 2015 and 16th October 2019. The Giant Otter reserve was officially opened by gold medalist Rebbecca Adlington on the 22nd March 2016.

Pteronura brasiliensis

Yorkshire Wildlife Park is home to Alexandra and Orimar, two Giant Otters. Alexandra is from Duisburg Zoo in Germany and Ori from Givskud in Denmark.

Alex can be identified by the white mark down her face and under her chin. She is 7 years old and is very food orientated – she will always be the first over if there is food involved. Ori is younger than Alex, he is almost 3 years old. He arrived in October 2019 and soon settled quickly and is very confident and inquisitive. Both otters love trout but they are also fed on roach, tilapia and very occasionally salmon, very similar fish that they would hunt and eat in the wild.

The Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation supports the conservation and protection of these endangered animals in their native Brazil.

The Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation is an active supporter of a key project in remote areas of South America to preserve the Giant Otter threatened by deforestation, commercial fisheries, and increased industrialisation across the Amazon Basin. YWPF funds a scheme to improve management and conservation of the Cantão ecosystem, carrying out local field surveys in the 90,000 hectare Cantão State Park, in Brazil, which is home to 700 species of birds and 300 species of fish. The project will improve awareness of the Giant Otters and the need for conservation, and will create local jobs as 30 oxbow lakes and river channels will be constantly monitored and other areas surveyed.

Working in association with Yorkshire Wildlife Park, YWPF are working to raise awareness for the endangered giant otter at the the park, the new otter reserve at Yorkshire Wildlife Park will help visitors understand the species and their fight for survival.
